The 12th conference on Lasers in the Conservation of Artworks is part of a series of congresses initiated 22 years ago – in 1995 – by Costas Fotakis and held in FORTH in Heraklion, Greece. It was followed by the LACONA II meeting in Liverpool, UK in 1997, LACONA III in Florence, Italy in 1999, LACONA IV in Paris, France in 2001, and then Osnabrück, Germany in 2003. The LACONA VI conference was held in Vienna in 2005, Madrid in 2007, Sibiu, Romania in 2009 and London in 2011. The LACONA X conference, due to political disturbances in Egypt, could not take place in 2013 in and was organized in Sharjah, UAE in 2014. Lacona XI was organized in Kraków, Poland in2016, and Paris is very much pleased to host again the 12th edition of the LACONA conference in 2018.
The early editions of LACONA were devoted mostly to the application of lasers to cleaning of artworks, and removal of unwanted coatings such as paint or varnish layers. Today, laser cleaning is not anymore an emerging technique, and efforts in this field focalize on the application of ultra-short pulsed lasers, and on better understandings of the impact of the laser tools at nanometer scale.
Another significant feature of recent LACONA conferences is the development papers on lasers used as analytical tools, such as LIBS, Raman spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography and nonlinear or two-photon laser microscopy, as well as laser based spectroscopic techniques feature regularly as significant subjects at LACONA.
The most recent LACONA conferences have seen a development of the coherent light-based methods for imaging, documentation of objects and structures and monitoring of restoration treatments.
To these three groups of contributions, LACONA XII conference will gather contributions on 3D laser scanning as a tool for general public mediation within the frame of exhibitions, and also to the possibilities and limitations of 3D artworks reproductions in the field of archeology.
For the second time the LACONA conference is preceded by a one-day workshop for about 50 participants, with demonstrations of a selection of cleaning, analytical and imaging, documentation laser tools.
